ENG - Maarten Inghels is a visual artist, writer, and poet. His interdisciplinary practice explores the boundaries of fiction through books, performances, sculptures and installations in the public space.

With The Invisible Route (2019), he created a city map for pedestrians to navigate the urban landscape unseen in an era of surveillance. His sculptures and performances, such as the monumental SAVE OUR SOULS (2022) —a 160-ton sand installation—and his journey on a polystyrene raft shaped like the word WATER (2018), reflect an ongoing dialogue between language, space, and community.

He has created social sculptures such as Human Chess (2024), a chess game with living participants on Mechelen’s Grand Market Square, and a monument for lost pets, consisting of an idiosyncratic collection of missing cat, dog, and bird posters, which served as a starting point for conversations with their owners.

As an author, Inghels has published several poetry collections and novels. With The Miracle of Belgium (2021), he presented a hybrid narrative about his nerve-wracking relationship with the world’s greatest con artist. Hannibal & Gideon (2025) is the account of an elephant journey across the Alps, following in the footsteps of Hannibal. From 2016 to 2018, he was the city poet of Antwerp, Belgium, with his poetry appearing as tattoos, plantable poetry, and public surveys.

NL - Maarten Inghels is een beeldend kunstenaar, schrijver en dichter. Zijn interdisciplinaire praktijk onderzoekt de grenzen van de fictie in boeken, performances, sculpturen en installaties in de publieke ruimte.

Met The Invisible Route (2019) maakte hij een stadskaart voor de voetganger om ongezien de stad te doorkruisen in een tijdperk van surveillance. Zijn sculpturen en performances, zoals het monumentale SAVE OUR SOULS (2022) van 160 ton zand, en zijn vaartocht op een piepschuim vlot in de vorm van het woord WATER (2018), tonen een voortdurende dialoog tussen taal, ruimte en gemeenschap.

Hij creëerde sociale sculpturen zoals Human Chess (2024), een schaakspel met levende figuranten op de Grote Markt van Mechelen, en een monument voor verloren huisdieren bestaande uit een eigenzinnige collectie van affiches van verloren katten, honden en vogels die Inghels als vertrekpunt nam voor gesprekken met de eigenaars.

Als auteur publiceerde Inghels diverse dichtbundels en romans. Met Het mirakel van België (2021) bracht hij een hybride vertelling over zijn zenuwslopende relatie met de grootste meesteroplichter ter wereld. Hannibal & Gideon (2025) is het verslag van een olifantenreis over de Alpen in de voetsporen van Hannibal. Van 2016 tot 2018 was hij stadsdichter van Antwerpen en verschenen zijn gedichten als tatoeages, plantgoed en publieksenquetes.
